We are somehow accustomed to think that to clean metals, we are to use heavy-duty or industrial types of cleaners. The more abrasive they are, the better they are cleaning.
However, just like any other item in our kitchen, the pantry can give us more than just edible food, but cleaning materials for our hard metals as well.
Natural cleaning products have been around for a long time already, but again, when we think of 'natural' cleaning products, we just thing of wiping surfaces, and that's about it.
Today, cleaning your metals would not require you to buy expensive cleaners that can clean your metals, but can harm your body, your family, and the environment.
Thanks to the wonders of lemon and vinegar, among others, we can now have safe, inexpensive, and efficient cleaning materials.
Tips and recipes
To clean silver: Combine boiling water with bicarbonate of soda, salt, a piece of aluminum foil, cream of tartar and soak your silver in this mixture. Make sure that the silver is completely submerged to get an even cleaning of your item.
To clean aluminum cookware: Alkali from stale water and sauces cooked in pans can cause darkening and discoloration of your aluminum pans. Opt for natural cleaning process such as combining 2 tablespoons cream of tartar and 1 quart water and let this mixture boil in your pan and simmer for at least ten minutes.
You should be able to notice the lightening or disappearance of stains from your aluminum ware.
*Prevention tip: Always keep/wipe your aluminum pans dry after use. This can discourage discoloration from infecting your pans.
To clean brass items:
Option 1: Combine lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda and mix up to a bit creamy of the consistency of toothpaste. Using a soft, clean cloth, rub the brass gently. This should eliminate the stains and discoloration caused by oxidation. Rinse it using clear water and let to dry.
Option 2: using again lemon juice, and cream of tartar, combine them to make a pasty consistency and apply evenly to the surface of the brass. Leave the mixture on for five minutes. Rinse with warm water and wipe with a soft cloth.
Use this natural cleaning substance instead of harsh chemicals to prolong the life of our brass items.
To clean chrome and stainless steel cleaner:
Simply wipe the surface using a soft, clean cloth dipped (not soaked, or the excessive acidity can cause damage as well) in undiluted white vinegar.
To clean your oven:
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda, pour in some hot water, and let it soak overnight. The combined action of the bicarbonate and hot water will loosen up the burnt-on food that got stuck in the bottom of your oven.
This solution can be used also for cleaning stubborn burns on your pot.
To clean stainless steel:
With a pasty consistency of combined of bicarbonate of soda and water, clean and gently wipe on the surface of any stainless steel surface. Ensure even wiping across the surface with a damp cloth. Let soak for five minutes. Wipe the solution and let air dry.
